Instructional Design is Needed!
Simply put, without quoting a source, outstanding online learning requires good instructional design, as does all instruction. What is the terminal goal? Task analyze the instruction. Is instruction really needed if barriers are removed for the learner? If the steps in the Dick & Carey book are followed, one will be able to create instruction that will meet the terminal goal.

Oooh! I'm so excited to tell you that I'll be teaching a new class this summer called "Online Course Design." We'll be using an ID approach to creating a complete online class, syllabus, lesson plans and all. Any chance I'll see you there?

I have to say that I think that I am an ISD junkie. I love it. It give order to a chaotic world :-) I am going to take 575. . .the one with numbers and little boxes. Yes, I admit to a barrier to Excel :-) Perhaps I shall sign up for this class. It sounds great!
I had to chuckle at your "power to the people" comment. Yes, I noticed right off the bat that a blog was a great vehicle for my opinions:-) I told a colleague the other day that I had posted 2+ items and had not even started the assignment. I told her it is a good place for me to spead my thoughts :-)
If you have read other opinions. . .(I feel like a Supreme Court Judge with all of my opinions) I have a VERY strong opinion about K-12.com schools and Mr. Bennett!
Thanks for your comments! Keep up the good design!
